Due to a number of economic issues, the job market in the United States, like that of almost all other countries, is extremely tight. This makes the already difficult challenge of finding work much more onerous, as businesses choose who they call for interviews and become even more careful when selecting the ideal man, or woman, for the position. With our Jobseeker’s Guide, you may give yourself the greatest opportunity possible.

Having a perfect resume is one of the most crucial aspects of the job search process. Anything less than perfection will not be tolerated. This is one area where you have complete control. You can’t afford to not give it your all.

√ Make sure you have a clear job search objective- Organize the content of your resume around that goal, but only include it if it contributes to the company’s bottom line.

Include only the most pertinent experiences- Leave out any personal or sensitive material. Do not provide information to prospective employers that could be used to penalize you. It is not necessary to submit information on your height, weight, health, marital status, or religion.

√ Create a positive first impression- A resume should ideally be one page long, but if that isn’t possible, the most significant information should be on the first page.

Make an effort to promote oneself- Consider yourself an item, potential employers as customers, and your resume as a self-promotional brochure. Your resume serves as a marketing tool for you. What distinguishes you and what are your advantages? What distinguishes you from others? In your resume, make sure to include this information.

√ Interviews, not employment, are the result of resumes- Your resume should be used to get an interview, not a job. The goal of your resume is to attract an employer’s attention enough for them to call you for an interview. Use the interview to explain your accomplishments in further detail and to secure a job offer.

√ Make a list of your abilities- Most people undervalue their abilities and frequently overlook their unique interpersonal talents. You must persuade your potential employer of all the wonderful things you can accomplish for them. Any level of foreign language proficiency as well as computer abilities should be considered.

√ Achievements- What you did yesterday is the best predictor of what you will do tomorrow. On page one, make a list of all your accomplishments that are relevant to the position you are applying for. Share your school, volunteer, and extracurricular activities if you have little or no employment experience.

√ Contact- Your real identity, location, phone numbers, and e-mail address should all be included on your resume. All of these connections must be functional, and your email account must be active if your company prefers to communicate by email.

√ Presentation- Make sure your resume is in the correct envelope with the relevant corporate address.

Use good English whenever possible- All grammatical mistakes should be removed from your resume. All of your sentences should be well-written. The design should be as appealing as possible while remaining true to the goal.

√ References should be available upon request- Unless specifically requested, do not provide references on your resume. “References Available Upon Request” should be stated. Any interview allows you to bring a typed, comprehensive list of 2-4 references (name, title, company, relationship, street address, email address and telephone number). Before calling the prospective employer, call the referee to refresh his or her memory. At minimum one of your references must be a previous employer or supervisor, according to most employers. Past educators can suffice if this is your first foray into the workforce.
